If there’s anything we love at our house, it’s writing notes. Even The Hubs leaves me cute little reminder notes on my car door in the mornings like “Don’t forget your coffee. : )”
I can’t imagine a day without a written note.
My girls and I write notes all the time. I love that this gets them practicing their writing skills. I want nothing more than to give them the love of writing so they can carry that with them everywhere they go in life. We even have our own family mailboxes, an idea we got from the truly inspirational Amy at Let’s Explore.
But the secret family love notes tops all. We spent an hour — an hour! — doing these on Sunday {once little one was feeling better.} It was truly a magical experience. I love being creative alongside my children — it’s truly the Wake Up call that I need on any given day.
This is a simple writing project and art project combined.
Secret Family Love Notes
All you need are white crayons, white construction paper and watercolors. We cut our paper into quarters so they were perfect love note size.
- Write your love note in the white crayon on the white paper.
- {You will be able to read it so it’s not entirely secret!!}
- Then paint over it with swirly, colorful watercolors.
- Let them dry.
- Repeat, repeat, repeat
I can tell already that this going to be a family favorite activity that we will do all year — not just for February, the month of Love. After all, we should be showing love all year long and this is just one of the great ways to do that. Well, and just read that note above … it was completely unprompted by me! I’m totally addicted.
Family Love Note Box
Now that you have piles and piles of love notes … what do you do with them?
Stick them in a love note box!
This is an idea that we found by the super lovely Katherine Marie. Our plan is to read the ones we write this month on Valentine’s Day. But, I have a bigger plan for the ones that are written the rest of the year — because, yes, I plan to keep this love note box thing going year round.
365, baby.
Because there just cannot be enough love notes in this life.
I’m convinced of it.

Now if this isn’t proof we are kindred souls, I don’t know what is! You will laugh when you see what I posted tonight!
I love that we are sharing the same message of being connected and focused on what really matters in this one precious life.
My girls are going to LOVE making secret family love notes. What a wonderful idea.
THANK YOU, as always!!!
Well, I cannot wait to check it out then!! As always!
What a creative idea! Love it! Kids are a bit young to do it yet, but will store it away for a future time
thanks!
I think you will be surprised with how easy it is … even for tiny hands. I would have tried this with just scribbles and paint when my girls were young! So much fun.
cute!
Wow, what a great idea and a good enough reason to get the paints out – something my daughters are always asking me to do! Will also be creating a love notes box as we have notes all over the house. Thank you for such an inspiring post…
Thanks, Sandra!! Let me know how it goes!
I love your crafty way of creating love notes! I’m thinking a box of these could make a great little gift for birthdays or Christmas. Secretly make them throughout the year, put them in a pretty box or in a little scrapbook, and give them as a gift from the heart.
I know those little hand written notes are some of my most treasured possessions. Some sit in my “special box” and a few are set out where I’ll see them each day. They always make me smile.
Great idea, Love It! Hope my little boy likes it when he’s old enough (only 8 months now).
Our family is into notes as well. It is especially gratifying when our six year old makes a card for the four year old telling her she is the best sister in the world. Thanks for the post – we’ll be trying those secret notes soon.
That is so sweet!
Love this idea! I just pinned it so we can try it soon!
That’s awesome! I’d love to hear if your family enjoys it as much as we did.
