{Project 52} Seek Out Awe

Seek out awe every chance you get and you will find happiness

New research suggests that seeking out awe-inspiring experiences will make us happier

This is Week 16 of {Project 52} Stay Awake. You are welcome to join in anytime during this year-long mindful living photo project. please upload your photos to our Project 52: Stay Awake Flickr group so we can see what an Awake life means for you.  Question of the Day — What tiny little miracle are you witnessing this week as you follow your children’s lead to seek out the awe in our world?

One of my absolute favorite aspects of being a mother is the pure joy we get from seeking out awe-inspiring experiences — ordinary moments that truly are magical in the eyes of a child.

We have the potential to live in awe every single day because we are parents.

As long as we are awake and ready to experience it all.

recent study mentioned on one of my favorite parenting Web sites suggests that people who experience awe are happier. The study even goes as far to say that when we experience awe we “feel more satisfied with our lives, more patient, more willing to help others.”

If awe is all it takes .. we just have to wake up, pay attention and live in each moment fully by surrendering to the magic of childhood unfolding before our eyes.

Because we have the potential to live in awe every single day while raising children.

We experience awe in a pile of ants on the ground.

We see it in the pink sky in the mornings.

We see it munching clover in our backyard.

We see it in the smile of a child when a butterfly lands on her arm.

Seek out awe every chance you get and you will find happiness

We hear it in the birds tweeting outside our windows.

We hear it in the eagerness of a boy seeing a fire truck.

We hear it in the words of the music.

We hear it in the pitter pat of the rain drops landing on the metal gutters.

We feel it in the touch of our child as she rubs our backs.

We feel it in our hearts when we hear I love you, Mommy.

We feel it when they climb that tall pole for the first time and slide down.

We live it when big questions require big answers.

We live it when their eyes light up at the wonders of the world.

We live it when we watch them sleep.

We experience awe a million times when we stop to pick up a flower, a stick, a pebble, a nut … notice the shape of the clouds, the way the flowers are blooming and the ferociousness of the storm traveling above our heads.

Awe seems to follow our children around wherever they go like a lost puppy. And our children seem to always take notice.

If you want to be happier just follow your children around for a while

This week, for Project 52: Stay Awake live in awe, experience awe, seek out awe. Find new ways to experience your life. Look at things with a fresh coat of opportunity, of optimism, of beauty. Try something new. Notice the details.

beryl aynPhoto Tip from Beryl: Get close this week. Seek out the details in your surrounding. Just when you think you’ve gotten close enough, take another step closer. What tiny intricate details can you capture in your world this week? Better yet, why not pass the camera off to your kids this week too.  See what they can capture from their vantage point and watch in awe as you you get a glimpse of the world through their eyes.

Question of the Day — What tiny little miracle are you witnessing this week as you follow your children’s lead to seek out the awe in our world?

Project 52 Stay Awake Week 15 Act like a Child

This is Week 15 of {Project 52} Stay Awake. You are welcome to join in anytime during this year-long mindful living photo project. please upload your photos to our Project 52: Stay Awake Flickr group so we can see what an Awake life means for you. And, if you also use Instagram please use the hashtag #awakeproject13. You are also welcome to write a blog post in response to any of these prompts and link it below!

Question of the Day: What have you done lately that was child-like? Please share!

They follow their heart.

They wear their emotions on their sleeves.

They only eat what they want and then they are done.

They will happily run and move all day and sit very little.

They wonder.

And wander.

And show real willpower.

They will say what they think, honestly.

They dance, freely … anywhere.

The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives by Albert Einstein

They put play first and foremost.

They climb trees … and read in trees.

They write books and poems freely.

They are superheros who save people.

They have superpowers that destroy evil.

They, at the blink of an eye, can be a raging bull, a sweet-eyed puppy and a human being with feelings.

They bring immense joy to every person they meet.

They see magic everywhere, even in places adults cannot.

They live in the present moment with very little thought of yesterday or tomorrow.

They know exactly how to find joy … they follow their heart.

For your Project 52: Stay Awake prompt this week, we want you to Act like a Child. Do one of the wonderful things that your child does. Use this as a good excuse to jump into that ball pit or ride your bike with no hands. Whatever you do, get a self-portrait of yourself doing it!

{Project 52} Mind Your Words

Watch what you are saying to your children and to yourself

Imagine for a second a day without mean words.

Imagine if you only heard the positive.

Imagine if you only spoke love.

Mind Your Words

Question of the Day: When was the last time you said something you wish you hadn’t?

Being mindful is more than just living in the present.

It’s about doing no harm.

To your family.

To yourself.

To those around you wherever you go.

So when you’re in the car, driving, mind your words about the other drivers.

Or when you aren’t happy with someone for one reason or another, mind your words with how you respond.

When someone you love has made a mistake — big or small — respond with loving words.

Be careful when you talk about yourself, too. That’s how our babies grow up to talk bad about themselves.

And, mind what you are letting them hear from others, too. On the radio, the TV or in a movie.

Watch what you are saying to your children and to yourself

Being Awesomely Awake means also being intentional about our roles as parents and role models.

Because, if you haven’t figured it out by now, our children are listening. They hear every word. They internalize every criticism. They learn to judge and complain and speak negatively — from us.

It’s not always easy, but being mindful about what goes out of our mouths and into the ears and hearts of others is a pretty big deal.

This week, your Project 52 challenge is simply to watch what you say. Be aware of your words and their impact. Listen more, speak less. Don’t say hurtful things. Speak Love. Embody peace. Try for just one day not to complain about anything — even the biggest injustice in the world. Negativity breeds negativity.

Beryl 4{Photo Tip from Beryl}: Write a note of love this week. Could be a love letter, a phrase, or a word that speaks love to you. Are you brave enough to share your love note in a photo this week? If not, how about you come up with a creative way to represent your love note in a photo instead. Show us what love means to you.

Speaking of photography!

Beryl is teaching the most amazing class for amateur photogs like myself and anyone else completely mystified by their DSLR camera. The class, called Momtographie, caters to moms who just want to know enough about their fancy cameras to take great family and kid shots. And, she writes it in mom speak so I actually understand it.

In fact, over the next few weeks, I’m going to be showing you some of the photos I’ve taken since I read through the material she offers in this course.

I am an affiliate of her course but only because I truly believe in this product and Beryl. She’s a kind person with a truly amazing story. And, well, one of my goals is to take better photographs for this site this year. Join me for Momtographie — a class like no other on the Internet.

Actually, right now you can score this amazing 6-week e-course for a low $199 early bird rate and that’s actually a really great investment for being able to finally create amazing photographs to adorn your home, office desk and to brag about on Facebook and elsewhere.

Check it out. It can’t hurt to read more about what she can do to help your photos and see if it’s your thing. I know I am excited to finally understand what those pesky A, S and P buttons are on my camera once and for all!

Project 52 Week 11 Savor

Over in The Abundant Mama village, we ended our 5-weeks talking a lot about savoring. It’s a good word, really. It’s a good mindful exercise. And it’s a good way to stay awake during the routine moments of our day.

So, savor.

Savor the way the chocolate hits your tongue and the way the sun lights up the trees.DSCF6063

Savor the way the coffee smell drifts through the kitchen and the way you light up when you see your child’s bed head.

Savor the way your bare feet slide on the cool floors and the way the blankets feel as you wrap them around you.

Savor the way he looks at you and the way the two of you dance around each other in perfect harmony.

Savor the day’s work not as chores but as nesting and the way it all makes you feel when it’s done.

Savor the taste of sweet carrots or juicy apples or crisp lettuce and the way it makes your body feel to eat it.

Savor the look of need in her eyes and the fact that you are still oh so needed.

Savor the bright moon and the magical stars and the mysteriousness of the darkness from your window before you sleep.

Savor it all.

Every bit of it.

Photo Tip from Beryl – What are you savoring this week? Is it the delicious meal you just shared with your family? The little bit of ‘me time’ you relished in with a mani/pedi? A nature hike with your kids? Cement the vision of what you’re savoring in your mind,  then capture that in your photos.  I guarantee you’ll feel a sense of peace every time you visit those images.
